James 2:14-20

Scripture:

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?

Devotion:

We began this week with a hard question: what good is a faith that never moves your hands? Isaiah showed us how deeply God cares about mercy toward the vulnerable, weighing it right alongside worship itself. Galatians reminded us that real faith works through love and bears fruit that looks like the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. James brought it all home with a warning worth sitting with all week, faith without works is dead.

Now it is time to respond with your own honest answer to what God has shown you these past several days. Maybe He has convicted you of a faith that has grown comfortable with words. Maybe He has brought a specific person to mind, someone who needs more from you than a kind sentiment. Maybe He has simply reminded you how much you need His grace to walk any of this out.

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord, You have spoken clearly to me this week through Your Word. I don't want to walk into Sunday unchanged. Take what You have shown me about faith and works and make it visible in how I live, starting today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
