James 2:14-20
Scripture:
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
Devotion:
This week has traced one conviction through three very different parts of Scripture. Isaiah confronted a people whose fasting appeared devout, while their treatment of workers and the poor showed their true selves. Paul told the Galatians that only faith working through love means anything, and that the Spirit produces fruit visible enough for others to name. James, tying it all together, said plainly that faith without works is dead.
None of this is meant to make you anxious about earning God's favor through your effort. James is not handing you a ladder to climb toward salvation. He is describing what salvation looks like once it has taken root in a person's life. Grace still saves you, fully and completely. But grace that saves you also sends you somewhere, toward someone, carrying something to give.
So today, get specific. Who is the brother or sister in your life who is lacking food, clothing, encouragement, or help of some kind? What would it look like this week to offer them more than a kind word? Maybe it is a phone call you have been putting off, a meal you can bring, a bill you can help cover, or simply time spent with someone who needs to know they have not been forgotten. Whatever it is, write it down, put a day on the calendar, and ask someone to hold you accountable to it.

Write your specific, measurable application. What will you do differently this week because of James 2:14-20? Be concrete, make it something you can actually report back on.
Prayer and Reflection:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
Lord, I don't want this week to end with good intentions that never leave my heart. Bring to mind the specific person You want me to serve, and give me the follow through to act before the week is over. Let my faith show itself in something real. In Jesus' name, Amen.
