James 1:5-11

Scripture:

15 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Devotion:

We began this week with a promise: God gives wisdom generously to anyone who asks Him in faith. Along the way we traced that promise back to Solomon, who taught his son to seek wisdom the way a prospector seeks silver, and forward to Jesus, who assured an uncertain crowd that their heavenly Father delights to give good gifts to those who ask. Each passage has added weight to the same conviction: the God we serve delights to give, and a settled, undivided faith is the doorway into everything He wants us to receive.

James's closing image, of rich pursuits fading like grass under a scorching sun, was meant to loosen our grip on whatever we have been tempted to treat as permanent, freeing our hands to receive something that will not fade with the seasons or lose its worth with the market. Wisdom from God is the kind of gift Solomon called a shield and a guard, sturdy enough to hold a person steady no matter what circumstances arrive next.

Your response to this week is what turns a study into worship. Perhaps the Lord has shown you a place where your faith has been divided, wavering between Him and something else. Perhaps He has revealed a situation where you have been guessing instead of asking. Perhaps He has simply reminded you, through Solomon and through Jesus both, that He is more generous than you had assumed. Whatever it is, write it down honestly, and carry it with you into Sunday.

Worship on Sunday morning is the natural response of people who have spent a week listening to God and are finally ready to answer Him back.

Write your response to God. What has He spoken to you this week through James 1:5-11? What will you do about it? A prayer, a commitment, a confession? Make it honest and make it yours.

Prayer and Reflection:

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord, You have given me a week to listen, and now I want to answer. Take whatever You have shown me through Your Word and make it real in the way I live, not just the way I think. Steady my heart, settle my faith, and receive my worship this Sunday as an honest response to who You are. In Jesus' name, Amen.
