James 1:5-11

Scripture:

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Devotion:

By Friday, a week spent in a passage should start pressing for something more than understanding. James did not write this letter to give his scattered readers an interesting theological puzzle. He wrote it to change how they faced difficult mornings, financial pressure, and the temptation to measure their worth by what they owned or lacked. Application is where this passage either becomes real or stays theoretical, and James leaves little room for the theoretical.

Consider first the invitation to ask. Most of us carry some situation right now that calls for wisdom we do not currently have, a decision, a relationship, a hard conversation waiting to happen. James tells us plainly that the way forward is to ask God directly and specifically. That means naming the actual situation in prayer, specific enough that you could point back to it honestly by Sunday.

Consider next the warning against a divided heart. It is worth asking honestly where your confidence has been split lately, between trusting God and quietly trusting something else, a bank balance, a relationship, a plan you have already made regardless of what God says. James's picture of the wave should feel uncomfortable if it applies to you, because it is meant to.

Finally, consider the reversal James describes between the lowly and the rich. Wherever you fall on that spectrum this week, ask what it would look like to find your standing in something sturdier than your circumstances allow. For some of us that means refusing to let scarcity define our worth. For others it means refusing to let comfort dull our dependence on God. Whichever describes you, make your application specific enough that you could report back on it honestly.

Prayer and Reflection:

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord, don't let this week end with words I only understood in my head. Show me the one situation where I need Your wisdom most right now, and give me the courage to ask You for it without holding anything back. In Jesus' name, Amen.
