Psalm 16

Scripture:

A Miktam of David.

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.

The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Devotion:

Psalm 16 is only eleven verses long, but do not let the brevity fool you, because there is a lifetime of theology packed into these lines. At the center of all of it sits a single declaration that holds everything else in place: "I have no good apart from you." Everything David writes after that, the contentment, the counsel in the night, the unshakeable steadiness, flows downstream from that one settled conviction.

David did not arrive at this confession from a place of ease. He was a man who had been chased across wilderness, betrayed by people close to him, and worn thin by years of waiting for promises that had not yet come to pass. He knew what it felt like to reach for something and come up empty, and somewhere in all of that he landed here, not on a feeling but on a decision. The Lord is my chosen portion, my cup, my inheritance. That is not ornamental language. That is a man telling you exactly where he has placed the full weight of his life.

This week we will walk through this psalm together using the HEAR method: Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond. Along the way we will read Ruth 1 and Acts 2, two passages that show us what this kind of trust looks like when it is tested and what it points to when finally seen in full. By the time Sunday comes, you will have spent an entire week inside these eleven verses, and the hope is that they will have gotten inside you.

For today, simply read the psalm slowly and out loud if you are able. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what He wants you to see, and write down whatever He highlights for you.

HEAR about it:

Highlight:
Write down the verse, phrase, or word the Holy Spirit highlighted for you. Why did it stand out? What might God be saying to you through it?

Prayer and Reflection:

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Father, as I begin this week in Your Word, I am asking You to do what only You can do, to cut through the noise and the hurry and speak something true into me. I do not want to read Psalm 16 and walk away the same. Still my heart long enough to hear You, and give me the kind of trust David had, the kind that holds even when life does not cooperate. In Jesus' name, Amen.
