Genesis 1:26-28
Scripture:
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Devotion:
When David wrote Psalm 8, he was meditating on a story he already knew, the story of creation found in Genesis 1. The connections between the two passages are not accidental. They are the threads of a single tapestry.
Look at the language of dominion. In Genesis 1:26, God says, "Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens." In Psalm 8:7–8, David writes that God has put under our feet "the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea." The echo is deliberate. Psalm 8 is Genesis 1 sung back to God as a song of praise.
But the deepest connection is in the phrase "image of God." Genesis tells us that humanity was created in the image and likeness of God, imago Dei. Psalm 8 describes that same humanity as "a little lower than the heavenly beings," crowned with glory and honor. These are two ways of saying the same glorious thing: human beings are not accidental. They are image-bearers of the living God, placed here with purpose, dignity, and responsibility.
This matters not just as theology but as practice. If every person you encounter today is an image-bearer of God, that changes how you treat them. It changes how you treat yourself.
HEAR about it:
Explain:
What connection do you see between Genesis 1:26–28 and Psalm 8? What new light does it shed on the main passage? What does "image of God" mean for how you see yourself and others?
Prayer and Reflection:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
God, thank You that I am not an accident. Thank You for the dignity You placed on human life from the very beginning. Help me to see others today as You see them, as image-bearers deserving of honor. In Jesus' name, Amen.
