Matthew 21:15-17

Scripture:

15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,

“‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies
    you have prepared praise’?”

17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

Devotion:

Matthew 21 is a scene of triumph and tension. Jesus has just entered Jerusalem on a donkey, the crowds spreading cloaks and branches before Him, crying "Hosanna to the Son of David!" He has entered the temple, driven out those who were buying and selling, and healed the blind and the lame. And then the children begin to cry out: "Hosanna to the Son of David!"

The chief priests and scribes are furious. "Do you hear what these are saying?" they demand. And Jesus responds with a quote from Psalm 8:2: "Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise."

This is a stunning claim. Psalm 8 asks, "What is man that you are mindful of him?" Jesus is answering: I am the one of whom this psalm speaks. The praise of children that David described as silencing the enemy is now being directed at the Son of God in the temple courts. The Hebrew letter of the law becomes the New Testament living Word.

Hebrews 2:6–9 makes this connection even more explicit, quoting Psalm 8 and applying it directly to Jesus. The one who for a little while was made lower than the angels, but who was crowned with glory and honor through His suffering and resurrection. Psalm 8 is ultimately not just a song about humanity. It is a song about the One who became human to redeem it.

HEAR about it:

Explain:

How does Matthew 21:15–17 change how you read Psalm 8? What does Jesus' use of this psalm reveal about who He is? What stood out most to you?

Prayer and Reflection:

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord Jesus, thank You for stepping into the story, for becoming what Psalm 8 describes so that we could be restored to the dignity we lost. You are the Son of David, the Lord of all creation. I praise You today. Amen.
