James 5:7-12
Scripture
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
Devotion
We began this week alongside a farmer watching the sky for rain, and we heard James call believers to be patient until the coming of the Lord. Through the prophets and through Job, we saw that those who remain steadfast are blessed, and that the Lord they wait for is compassionate and merciful. Lamentations showed us a grieving prophet who found hope by calling to mind the steadfast love of God, and Romans 8 lifted our eyes to a creation that groans as it waits for the glory that will one day be revealed.
Taken together, these passages tell us that waiting is a normal part of the Christian life, and that God meets His people in it with mercy that is new every morning. The return of Christ gives our waiting a destination, and the Spirit He has given us assures us that the redemption He began will be completed.
As this week comes to a close, consider how God has spoken to you through these passages. Perhaps He has given you renewed hope in a season that has felt long, or perhaps He has convicted you about the way you have been speaking to the people closest to you. Whatever He has shown you, write it down below and bring it with you to worship on Sunday, ready to offer it to the One who is faithful to finish what He has started.
HEAR About It
Respond
Write your response to God. What has He spoken to you this week through James 5:7-12? What will you do about it? A prayer, a commitment, a confession? Make it honest and make it yours.
Prayer and Reflection
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
Lord, You have shown me this week that You are compassionate and merciful, and that Your faithfulness holds steady through every season of waiting. Help me wait with an established heart and a hopeful spirit, trusting that the coming of the Lord is at hand. Take what You have stirred in me and shape my life around it as I prepare to worship You on Sunday. In the name of Jesus, our coming King, Amen.
