James 4:13-17

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

We began this week by listening to a group of merchants describe their plans for the coming year, and we heard James remind them that they did not know what tomorrow would bring. Proverbs 16 showed us that God has always invited His people to plan with wisdom while trusting Him to establish their steps, and Luke 12 showed us the sobering end of a man who prepared for many years of comfort without ever preparing his soul to meet God.

Through all three passages runs the same steady truth: our lives are brief, our plans are limited, and our God is faithful and sovereign over every one of our days. That truth could easily leave us anxious, yet the gospel gives us every reason for hope. Jesus Himself, on the night before His crucifixion, prayed that the Father’s will would be done, and by submitting to that will He secured eternal life for everyone who trusts in Him. Because of Christ, the shortness of our lives does not have the final word, and the future we cannot see is already held securely in the hands of the One who loves us.

Your response to this week is what matters most. Perhaps God has shown you a place where you have been speaking about tomorrow with too much confidence in yourself. Perhaps He has reminded you of something good you have been putting off, or stirred a gratitude in you for the days He has already given. Whatever He has said, write it down in your journal below, and bring it with you to worship this Sunday as your offering of response to Him.

Respond

Write your response to God. What has He spoken to you this week through James 4:13-17? What will you do about it? A prayer, a commitment, a confession? Make it honest and make it yours.

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Written prayer

Lord, thank You that my days are in Your hands and that You have been faithful to me this week. As I come to worship on Sunday, help me bring a humble heart and a willingness to live out what You have shown me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
