James 2:14-20
Scripture:
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 Butsomeone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
Devotion:
James wrote this letter to Jewish believers scattered outside their homeland, congregations who knew the Scriptures well and were tempted, as we often are, to let their faith settle into something they mostly thought about rather than lived out. In the passage before us this week, he asks a question that still lands hard on us today: what good is a faith that never moves your hands or your feet? He pictures a brother or sister with no food and no coat, met by someone offering warm words and nothing else. That picture unsettles us because it shows how easily faith can operate as pure theory, untouched by obedience.
This week we will walk through James 2:14-20 using the HEAR method, Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond. On Wednesday we will step back into Isaiah 58, where God confronts His people about a fast that looked devout but ignored the people suffering around them. On Thursday we will move into Galatians 5, where Paul describes a faith that works itself out through love and produces fruit that looks like the Spirit Himself. By Sunday you will carry a full week of meditation with you into worship.
Today, simply read the passage. Read it slowly, and read it more than once if you can. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you a word or phrase He wants to press into your heart this week, and write down whatever He brings to mind.
HEAR about it:
Highlight:
Write down the verse, phrase, or word the Holy Spirit highlighted for you. Why did it stand out? What might God be saying to you through it?
Prayer and Reflection:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
Lord, You know how quickly my faith can settle into words without action. Open my eyes this week to see what You want to show me in James 2, and give me a heart that is willing to respond to whatever You reveal. Bring to mind someone I can love with more than good intentions today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
