James 2:1-7

Scripture:

1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?

Devotion:

This week began with a simple, uncomfortable picture, two visitors walking into the same room and receiving two very different welcomes. From there we traced that concern for impartiality all the way back to Leviticus, where God instructed his people to judge every neighbor with the same measure of righteousness, and forward into Luke, where Jesus filled his banquet table with the poor and the overlooked rather than those who could pay him back. Across every day this week, one truth has stayed constant, the God we serve does not measure people the way the world does, and he calls his church to reflect that same character.

James wrote to a congregation that needed to hear this warning before favoritism hardened into an unquestioned habit. We need to hear it just as much. Whatever the Holy Spirit has shown you this week, whether it is a conviction about someone you have treated with less honor than they deserve, or a fresh gratitude that God chose to draw near to you when you had nothing to offer him, write it down. Let your response be specific and let it be honest.

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord, you have spent this week showing me your heart for the poor and the overlooked, and I do not want to leave it on the page. Take what you have stirred in me and shape it into something real in how I live and how I love. Prepare my heart now for Sunday, so I come ready to worship alongside my church family with a response worth bringing. In the name of Jesus, who welcomes all who come to him, Amen.
