James 1:19-27
Scripture:
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Devotion:
This week began with a call to be quick to hear and slow to speak, and it has carried us through Moses reminding Israel how near God's word truly is and Jesus describing two builders who faced the exact same storm with two very different outcomes. Every thread of this week has pointed toward the conviction James wanted to plant in his scattered readers, that faith must move beyond listening into action.
Respond is the final step of the HEAR method, and it is the step that turns a week of study into a changed life. Think back over what you highlighted on Monday, what you explained on Tuesday and Wednesday, what you connected through Matthew 7 on Thursday, and what you applied on Friday. Somewhere in that week, God has been speaking to you, and He is still waiting for your answer.
Your response might take the shape of a prayer of confession if this week has exposed a pattern of anger or a careless tongue. It might take the shape of a renewed commitment to care for someone who has been overlooked. It might simply be gratitude, a recognition that God has planted His word in you and it is beginning to grow. Write it down in whatever form feels true to what God has done in you this week.
Then bring that response with you Sunday morning. Join your Broadmoor family at 9:30 as we gather to worship together, because the word that has been shaping you privately all week is meant to be lived out together, as a whole church family putting it into practice side by side.
HEAR about it:
Respond:
Write your response to God. What has He spoken to you this week through James 1:19-27? What will you do about it? A prayer, a commitment, a confession? Make it honest and make it yours.
Prayer and Reflection:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
Lord, thank You for a week spent in Your word. Take what You have shown me and make it real in how I live from here. Prepare my heart to worship with my church family this Sunday, and let our response to You rise as one voice together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
