Matthew 7:24-29
Scripture:
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Devotion:
This passage closes the Sermon on the Mount, the longest recorded block of Jesus' teaching in Scripture, covering everything from the Beatitudes to prayer to anxiety to how we treat and judge one another. Jesus ends this teaching with a story about two builders, a story simple enough for a child to picture and weighty enough to shape the rest of a person's life.
Both builders in the story hear the exact same words from Jesus. Both face the exact same storm, with rain falling, floods rising, and wind beating against their walls. The only difference between them is what they did after they heard, one man laying his foundation on rock and the other settling for sand because it was easier, faster, or simply more convenient at the time.
James almost certainly had teaching like this in mind when he wrote about hearers and doers, since he grew up as Jesus' half-brother and would have heard sermons in this same vein throughout his life. Where James pictures a man forgetting his own reflection in a mirror, Jesus pictures a house collapsing in a storm. Both images carry the same warning, that hearing truth without acting on it leaves a person exposed exactly when the pressure finally comes.
Notice too how the crowd responds at the end of this sermon. They are astonished by the authority with which Jesus taught, an authority that set Him apart from every religious teacher they had known. The word James calls us to obey carries that same authority behind it, the very voice of the one who spoke to them like no one had before.

Explain:
How does Matthew 7:24-29 deepen your understanding of James 1:19-27? What do the two builders reveal about the difference between hearing God's word and building your life on it?
Prayer and Reflection:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
Jesus, build my life on the rock of Your word so it holds steady whenever the storm comes. Give me the discipline to keep building through the ordinary days, long after today's feelings have faded. In Your name, Amen.
