James 1:5-11

Scripture:

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Devotion:

James wrote to scattered believers who were enduring hardship on every side, and he wastes no time turning their trials into an invitation. Wisdom, he says, is available to anyone who lacks it, and the door standing open before it is prayer. This is where our week begins, with a promise about the character of God: He gives generously, without finding fault, to those who come asking.

The catch, if we can call it that, has everything to do with our own willingness to trust, since God's willingness was never in question. James insists that the request be made in faith, with no divided heart, no wavering between trusting God and hedging our bets elsewhere. He compares the doubter to a wave tossed by competing winds, moving wherever the strongest gust happens to blow. A life like that cannot expect to receive anything settled from the Lord, because it has never settled on Him in the first place.

Then James shifts, somewhat suddenly, from wisdom to wealth, and the shift makes more sense the longer we sit with it. The poor believer is told to take pride in a high position no bank account could purchase, while the rich believer is told to find his glory in being brought low, because every fortune withers under the same sun that scorches the grass of the field. Both instructions aim at the same target: a heart anchored somewhere sturdier than circumstances, whether those circumstances happen to be scarcity or abundance.

This week we will spend time with James 1:5-11 using the HEAR method: Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond. We will also trace this passage back to Proverbs 2, where wisdom is described as something worth digging for like buried silver, and forward to Matthew 7, where Jesus Himself promises that the Father who hears our asking is good beyond what we could imagine. By the time Sunday arrives, you will have spent a week considering what it looks like to ask God for wisdom and truly mean it.

Today, simply read the passage. Read it more than once if you have the time, and let your pace slow down enough to notice which phrase catches your attention. Ask the Holy Spirit what He wants you to see, then write it down.

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord, You promise to give wisdom generously to those who ask, so I am asking now. Settle my wavering heart and teach me to trust You without hedging my bets on anything else. Show me this week what it means to seek You with an undivided mind. In Jesus' name, Amen.
