Psalm 128
Scripture:
1 Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways!
2 You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.
5 The Lord bless you from Zion!
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life!
6 May you see your children's children!
Peace be upon Israel!
Devotion:
Psalm 128 is a short psalm, but it carries a kind of quiet weight that takes a moment to feel. It is one of the Songs of Ascent, a collection of fifteen psalms that pilgrims sang as they made their way up to Jerusalem for the great feasts of worship. By the time they reached this song, they had been walking for days, singing their way through distress and longing and trust, and now they arrive at something that sounds like arrival itself. A table. A family gathered around it. A life that is, in some deep and settled sense, well.
The psalm opens with a beatitude: "Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord." That word, “blessed”, carries the sense of flourishing, of a life that is going in the right direction, ordered toward something good. And the psalm is careful to say that this blessing flows from two things held together: fearing the Lord and walking in His ways. The fear spoken of here is not terror. It is the kind of reverent awe that reshapes your whole orientation toward God, bending your life toward His purposes and away from your own.
This week, we will walk through Psalm 128 together using the HEAR method: Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond. We will also look at the portrait of faithful character in Proverbs 31 and what Paul has to say about household life in Colossians 3. By Sunday, you will come to worship having sat with a vision of what a God-centered life, at home and at work and in the world, can look like.
Today, simply read the psalm. Read it slowly, and if you are able, read it aloud. Then ask the Holy Spirit: What do You want me to see here? Write down whatever He highlights for you.
HEAR about it:
Highlight:
Write down the verse, phrase, or word the Holy Spirit highlighted for you. Why did it stand out? What might God be saying to you through it?
Prayer and Reflection:
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.
Lord, as I begin this week in Your Word, open my eyes to what You want me to see in Psalm 128. Quiet the noise of everything pressing in around me, and let Your voice be the one I hear most clearly. Speak to me about my home, my work, and the people You have placed in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
