Proverbs 3:5-7

Scripture:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

Devotion:

When David wrote "commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act," he was drawing from a deep well of Hebrew wisdom that Proverbs 3 comes from as well. These two passages are not just thematically related; they are part of the same ongoing conversation in Scripture about what it actually means to trust God, not in theory, but in the middle of a real day with real decisions in front of you.

The command in Proverbs 3:5 is total. Trust with all your heart, not most of it, not the parts that feel manageable. The verse immediately names the competing option: your own understanding. That is the thing we reach for when we are not reaching for God, our instincts, our projections, our careful read of the situation. Solomon is not saying those things are worthless. He is saying they were never meant to be the foundation.

Verse 6 gives the practice a name: in all your ways acknowledge him. The Hebrew word for acknowledge is yada, meaning to know intimately. This is not a polite nod toward God before you do what you were already going to do. It is the practice of actually bringing Him into the moment of decision, pausing long enough to ask, and then letting His direction carry more weight than your own instincts.

Psalm 37 told you to commit your way to the Lord. Proverbs 3 shows you what that looks like when it is lived out from the inside.

HEAR about it:

Explain:

What connection do you see between Proverbs 3:5-7 and Psalm 37? What new light does it shed on the main passage? What does Ruth's choice reveal about what it looks like to make God your refuge?

Prayer and Reflection:

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

God, I confess that I lean on my own understanding more than I realize. I calculate and plan and try to manage outcomes, and then I ask You to bless what I have already decided. Forgive me for that. Today I want to actually acknowledge You, not after the fact but in the middle of it, before the decision is made and while it still costs me something to wait on You. Make straight my paths, even when I cannot see where they are going. In Jesus' name, Amen.
