Psalm 8

Scripture:

1 O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, whichyou have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Devotion:

Psalm 8 opens and closes with the same refrain: "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" Everything between those bookends is held in place by the gravitational pull of God's glory. This is a psalm of wonder, and wonder is something we desperately need to recover.

David most likely wrote this as he lay beneath an open sky. He had spent years as a shepherd, tending flocks through long, dark nights. He knew the stars. He knew the moon. And yet, somehow, the longer he looked up, the more astonished he became. Not by his smallness, but by the grace of a God who noticed him anyway.

This week, we will walk through this psalm together using the HEAR method: Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond. We will also look at the Old Testament roots of this psalm in Genesis 1 and its New Testament fulfillment in Matthew 21. By Sunday, you will come to worship with a week's worth of meditation behind you.

Today, simply read the psalm. Read it slowly. Read it aloud if you can. Then ask the Holy Spirit: What do You want me to see here? Write down whatever He highlights for you.

HEAR about it:

Highlight:
Write down the verse, phrase, or word the Holy Spirit highlighted for you. Why did it stand out? What might God be saying to you through it?

Prayer and Reflection:

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and reflect on the passage you read today. Let the Holy Spirit bring to mind what stood out to you and why. Then spend some time in prayer. Pray for the people around you, for your outlook on this day, and for the needs you are carrying in your own life.

Lord, open my eyes to see what You want me to see in this passage this week. Still my heart and quiet the noise around me. Speak through Your Word, and give me ears to hear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
